Under The Horse Rugs – Too Hot Or Too Cold?

Under The Horse Rugs – Too Hot Or Too Cold?

The horse rugs are a wonderful thing. So many colours, designs and thicknesses. When weather is temperamental and switching from hot to chilly in the space of a few hours, it can be hard to decide whether to use the horse rugs you have.

If your horse has been allowed to grow a natural coat and they are well-fed and healthy, they can withstand most weather extremes. If allowed a natural environment a horse will choose the best-sheltered place to stand during a storm.

Horses’ coats have two layers. You can see the top layer lays in a downward shape to help water run off the coat. Meanwhile, the undercoat stays dry and fluffy. If it is cold and snowy, a healthy horse will accumulate a layer of snow on his/her back that tells you they are retaining warmth as the snow is not melting.

A horse with adequate hay or grass creates warmth by feeding the bacteria in the gut and they warm from the inside out. Putting a rug on a horse crushes the hair loft and causes a horse to actually lose heat toward the outside. While this may or may not be retained by the blanket itself, when the blanket is removed, the vital loft and air layer are lost and a horse will chill. If the blanket causes sweating or is otherwise dampened, it only adds to heat loss.

How To Do A Temperature Check

Feel under the rug. If the horse is sweating, it’s too hot. If the horse is not sweating and it’s not getting wet from the rain then a well-fed rugged horse with decent shelter should not suffer too much from the cold. Observe its behaviour. Does it hunch up looking miserable all day or is your horse happily grazing? You should recognise normal horse behaviour to see if your horse is distressed.

Any horse owner should spend time with their horse, therefore becoming aware if something feels “off”. Things to watch for are:

  • A change in its normal behaviour.
  • Observe its respiration rate for increased movement.
  • Take their pulse.
  • Get a thermometer and check its temp. If you do not have one handy, feeling their armpit is better than nothing.

If you know what is normal for your horse then you will detect subtle signs of illness or distress. A horse is a prey animal and will instinctively hide signs of illness or pain. Showing illness or pain makes it a target. It’s your responsibility to know if all is not well.

Horse Gift Ideas For Christmas

Horse Gift Ideas For Christmas

When it comes to horse gift ideas, horse people are easy to buy presents for. Where to begin? There are so many options!

Male or female? A horse owner or a horse lover? English or Western riding? Pay attention to that. It’s important.

Some small home decor horse gift ideas can be:

  • Silk scarf with a horsey motif
  • Framed pencil horse drawing, or charcoal,
  • Horse earrings small and silver?
  • Silver bit bracelet or leather cuff with a bit motif.
  • Desk ornament,
  • horseshoe ornament,
  • bronze horse figurine – although do pay attention to the quality of how the horse is formed.

For larger horse gift ideas:

A nice halter is always a good choice. The size is forgiving, either foal/pony, avg horse or large/draft horse. Halters come in cheerful colours, some with a little bling. All breeds and disciplines use halters. They also need to be replaced every couple of years, so they are usually needed.

Riding gloves are another practical option that needs replacing every couple of years.

Horse treats are also fun, just be aware of the ingredients the treats are made of and are horse friendly. This also applies if you make them yourself. Brushes are generic, but maybe a bit too utilitarian to be for a gift unless it is a pretty set or an item not usually used. Nicely scented horse shampoo or show horse shampoo if they show regularly. You could make a little horsey spa package with a sponge, a curry comb and nice shampoo.

If you know what type of riding your horse person does, then a saddlecloth might be nice. For schooling or trail riding, any colour or trim is fine. You need to know the style of riding and size, so this one is a bit more complicated.

If they don’t already have a stable/paddock plate with their horse’s name on it, that’s a thought.

Most horse people are particular about their gear (gloves have to fit and have the right feel). About the only piece of clothing that would work if they wear tall boots are socks. I know that sounds boring, but since they are covered up by the boots, these come in all sorts of fun colours and patterns. Also, sock size is forgiving.

If you know the size of their horse, why not take advantage of a horse rug sale and buy them a new rug? It’s a larger purchase they might be holding off on buying, so you will be coming to the rescue!

When all else fails, a gift certificate to their favourite tack shop is always nice.

PVC Mesh Summer Horse Rug New In Store!

PVC Mesh Summer Horse Rug New In-Store!

You asked for it, and we listened! Bang For Your Buck Horsegear is pleased to announce a new arrival to our collection. Our NEW PVC Mesh summer horse rug is a more durable summer option for those with rough paddocks, shared paddocks or simply horses that are hard on rugs.

We started with the highest quality UV Resistant PVC Mesh Fabric for the basis of this combo. Now, PVC mesh is tough as old boots in terms of rips but in most cases, this tough fabric will fail at the centre seam of the rug first, which is why we’ve eliminated the weakness and removed the centre seam. We’ve added rump darts and belly bands so you have a rug that doesn’t move on the horse but will last!

It also has all of our Standard BFYB Features Including:

  •  UV Resistant PVC mesh
  •  UV Resistant Marine Grade Stabilized threads used
  •  Heavy-duty buckles and clips
  •  Bar-Tac Reinforced fittings, necks and gussets
  •  Extended wither fleece protection

Winter Horse Rugs – Does Your Horse Need It?

Winter Horse Rugs – Are They Needed?

It’s time to pull out your winter horse rugs! Or is it?

Winter has started to poke its head up here in the south-east corner of QLD! While we rarely see the types of freezing temperatures as our friends in south-west QLD, NSW & Victoria do, there are occasions where your horse would appreciate a snuggly rug overnight.

The question a lot of you are wondering is – how do you work out if rugging them is beneficial?

Here are some tips on how to work out if you should rug your horse or not.

What breed is your horse?

Most breeds, especially ponies, grow thick coats during winter that protect them well. More refined breeds such as pure Arabians, Thoroughbreds and warmbloods are susceptible to feeling the cold more. If you have one of these breeds who have a naturally thin coat all year round, then rugging is a good option.

What’s the weather like?

Is it cold but dry, or constantly wet and muddy, or even snowing? If the last two, then it is a good idea to rug them just to help protect them from the wet and cold.

How frequently is your horse worked?

Is your horse is ridden every day or competes frequently? Answer yes, then you will want to reduce the amount of fluffy coat that your horse can produce. Rugging is a way of limiting hair growth, but it must be done regularly. If the horse is only ridden every so often then it could be better to allow them to grow out their coat. Remember to take extra time to dry them off when you do work them.

Does your horse lose condition easily?

Do you have a horse that drops condition quickly and requires hard feeding all year round? Then rugging is definitely a good choice. This means he won’t burn energy and fat trying to keep himself warm.

What rugs do you have available?

If you only have a heavy thickness winter rug, then you probably only want to use it when it is really wet and cold and miserable overnight. If you have a range of different rugs for the seasons, then a lighter rug overnight is a good option. A lighter rug can also be left on during the day if needed.

Are you able to remove the rug during the daytime when it’s warmer?

If you’re unable to regularly rug and unrug your horse depending on the temperature, then it could be an idea to not rug them. Horses can also overheat quite easily with a winter rug on during average daytime temperatures here in QLD, so for their comfort, being left unrugged can be better for your horse.

We hope this has given you some guidance on whether to rug your horse this winter season. We have a great variety of winter horse rugs available on sale at the moment that can cover most weather options, so why not check it out? You’ll need to get in quick as popular sizes are selling fast!

Horse Rug Sizes For Big & Small

Horse Rug Sizes For Big & Small

horse rugs all sizesHorse rug sizes for cows?! Check out this super-cute little fella!!! This little buffalo calf is snug and warm in his mini-sized Bang For Your Buck Horse Rug! As you can see, our quality horse rugs come small enough for the littlest foal (or calf!) to the biggest draft horse.

Our horse rug sizes are designed in Australia and made for our climate. Today, Bang For Your Buck Horsegear has become the fastest growing manufacturer of quality summer and winter horse rugs. With our horse rugs sizing, we’ve taken into account that it’s not just the length of the rug that matters. We also adapt the size of the neck rugs in the combos and the drop of the rugs to make sure neither of these is too short or too long for the rug size.

We understand that when buying online, it can be tricky to pick the right size for your horse. Not only does height vary, but their build, shoulder width, and chest depth can be varying. The best way to work out what size rug you need, is to measure your horse. Then compare it to the measurement of the rug you want to purchase.

The other consideration with this colder weather arriving is rug thickness. Horse rug fill is measured in a unit called a denier. The higher the number, the thicker and warmer the horse rug is.

Depending on your needs, 1200D is the most popular one for a winter rug.  In general, a 1200 Denier would have a fabric weight of 370gsm but it is very common in these days, some manufacturers use 300gsm to compete for the price.  The material looks the same and almost feels the same but its strength and durability will be down to 20% thinner.
